Covid 19 with the lockdowns affected The Tarlton Theatre I co-own but my regular day job went crazy busy as a result of the same virus. The company I work for produces UV lights that are powerful enough to actually kill most of the virus as it travels through your ducts. Many of the competitors make false claims and use cheaper low-power UV lamps. I am proud of what my employer’s integrity is when we present our product to the market. </span></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: PT Sans;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: PT Sans;">The Tarlton Theatre which I co-own with Tarl Knight is something we are pretty proud of. During our temporary closure in 2020 do to the Covid 19 lockdown, Tarl and I set to taking interior shots of our beautiful historic theatre.</span></div><div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjVvkR3izR0BoYi2TnuB2PTZXAY8ZKhRtPkdsDRVLG35e7tOHZhOTXHhVBRxAknmepLXXPSOcBpQS3uziFmP2lclMZugzjkfUGuCRhGP3U7p9qqKw_n5rm2T6tB7X41lBJiQmEwos_zMybeLOklpKse4jSv5JD-upIvnqnr6ywzA-1jqrzWDiT3bA=s6815" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="6815" data-original-width="4701" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjVvkR3izR0BoYi2TnuB2PTZXAY8ZKhRtPkdsDRVLG35e7tOHZhOTXHhVBRxAknmepLXXPSOcBpQS3uziFmP2lclMZugzjkfUGuCRhGP3U7p9qqKw_n5rm2T6tB7X41lBJiQmEwos_zMybeLOklpKse4jSv5JD-upIvnqnr6ywzA-1jqrzWDiT3bA=w442-h640" title="The Front of The Tarlton Theatre as it looks today." width="442" /></a></div></div><p style="text-align: center;"> <span style="text-align: center;">The Tarlton Theatre as it looks from the outside today.</span></p><p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: PT Sans;">The Tarlton building started out as an automobile dealership. In the early 1940's it was renovated into what was being billed as the most modern theatre in the area simply called "West." Back then the screens were TV format meaning 4:3 like TV was before 16:9 digital. In the 1950's to compete with the rise of television's popularity, another refresh added a huge cinemascope screen that still exists today. In the early 1980's it went into decline and was converted to a drafthouse cinema showing second-run films that have finished first run along with beer and pizza. </span></p><div><div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: PT Sans;">I purchased this building in 2000 and after a really expensive renovation opened Historic West Theatre as an arthouse movie theatre 7 days a week and a cool dance club after 10:30 on weekends. A small full service kitchen was added along with much larger and modern bathrooms. We built a huge stage that exists there today. After taking a peak above a depressing drop ceiling, I saw this hidden curved wall above the doors. I had the plaster blasted off to expose brick in the lobby. </span></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: PT Sans;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: PT Sans;">This place stopped being a movie theatre in 1995 when Packer Player Nick Barnett turned it into the night club "56" full time.</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEg79SvF4w3Z8riPUtjt09FOI_XDIJ-PUPSGwm1GOfAlMYb8fVtCALWeYG2LSglCrypOVSUtQx6a98SF6tGOZuB8DZLNBN1AnIViiEo_95Q3RXxR0k18gKmDTB6BdH3uWLY-sP3WiJCFIFMUkZ4IcLKJmHfINxJGxsuWV6c-WHmLZ4ELUDZ3h5TNyQ=s1750" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1251" data-original-width="1750" height="458" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEg79SvF4w3Z8riPUtjt09FOI_XDIJ-PUPSGwm1GOfAlMYb8fVtCALWeYG2LSglCrypOVSUtQx6a98SF6tGOZuB8DZLNBN1AnIViiEo_95Q3RXxR0k18gKmDTB6BdH3uWLY-sP3WiJCFIFMUkZ4IcLKJmHfINxJGxsuWV6c-WHmLZ4ELUDZ3h5TNyQ=w640-h458" title="Historic West Theatre 2002" width="640" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Historic West Theatre 2002</div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjo_J4jRA1znBs2ahblucjM7kNr9uvVb5XsFHxJIy4vZtNj6EeGpLZFvEGNAP63EnKMOb-GssNUt0Fm98dPMpwFMN_ADoXjGn79164Qwq9cqgpfFvYNyqXxgBOOmrhxn2jE4BZrzWfjERFre-krOeeR3n2np-2esucrCt3KCnjTZkm0ifdT661Z1Q=s1750" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1171" data-original-width="1750" height="268" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjo_J4jRA1znBs2ahblucjM7kNr9uvVb5XsFHxJIy4vZtNj6EeGpLZFvEGNAP63EnKMOb-GssNUt0Fm98dPMpwFMN_ADoXjGn79164Qwq9cqgpfFvYNyqXxgBOOmrhxn2jE4BZrzWfjERFre-krOeeR3n2np-2esucrCt3KCnjTZkm0ifdT661Z1Q=w400-h268" width="400" /></a></div><div><br /></div><blockquote style="border: none; margin: 0px 0px 0px 40px; padding: 0px;"><div style="text-align: center;">Interior with Neon restored from the 1950's </div></blockquote><p style="text-align: center;"> <span style="text-align: center;">Photo courtesy of Shawn Hamachek</span></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: PT Sans;">Tarl and I rescued the building, now unoccupied for some time, <i>(purchasing it a second time for me, first time for Tarl)</i> in October 2018. We had a lot of repairs to do and paint and paint... We opened The Tarlton Theatre on December 15, 2018. Our goal was to provide a venue to screen classic films, have live bands and performers on stage, EDM shows with humongous bass speakers and guest DJ's from around the country along with other one-off events. But most importantly be a resource for a diverse community to have an affordable place to hold events that celebrate their culture</span></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: PT Sans;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: PT Sans;">In the past we have hosted Burlesque shows, Hip Hop, comedy shows, a wedding and karaoke. Today we have added Spoken Word nights and partnered with the Weidner Center for Perfoming Arts on the UWGB campus for a schedule of events in our theatre that also include monthly screenings of classic films hosted by the Green Bay Film Society. He had done covers for Sports Illustrated among others. I was fascinated with the look so after purchasing some strip lights (strobes with narrow sofboxes attached), I tried to mimic this look. Not the kind of lighting you want for traditional portraits, but great for accenting the muscles on body builder Kevin Ott.</p><p>It was hard for me to pick a favorite from my shoot with Kevin. It's not just for wildlife photography!</h3>
<span style="font-weight: normal;"><span style="font-size: small;">Most photographers know using a long telephoto lens will give you a shallow depth of field. To overcome that, you need to stop the lens down to a small aperture which then means you need a lot of light or you need to increase the ISO rating on the sensor (or use a much faster ISO film).</span></span><br />
<br />
What if instead you want that very shallow depth of field? That is the subject of this article.<br />
<br />
Two things happen with the telephoto lens on a camera. One is that depth of field is greatly reduced. (What is in focus before/at/behind the subject.) You can use that to your advantage by leaving the lens aperture setting wide open, or get better depth of field by stopping down the lens quite a bit.<br />
<br />
The second thing about a telephoto lens is it will flatten out a subject. 85mm lenses are used for portraiture on a full frame 35mm DSLR because it flattens the features of a human face making for a more attractive result. (The nose will move back and the ears forward.)<br />
<br />
This flattening effect is part of why the people in this photo have that almost 3-D look and stand out so well in the photograph. They almost seem to be cut out and placed onto another background.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgXgZ30n4-yg-Jvrml7omqTkyQ3qI6E43qUg7YphK5G2idkUpdpHgdkKjFi7eSVzk3RwdIw0bIDrzkEfAfiuigAS7EKsMCulAkqSGp4tiu_cLxvAX4v_Qop1PWp6KhL2IbG5QJJxzU6/s1600/DSC_6114.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1068" data-original-width="1600" height="425" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgXgZ30n4-yg-Jvrml7omqTkyQ3qI6E43qUg7YphK5G2idkUpdpHgdkKjFi7eSVzk3RwdIw0bIDrzkEfAfiuigAS7EKsMCulAkqSGp4tiu_cLxvAX4v_Qop1PWp6KhL2IbG5QJJxzU6/s640/DSC_6114.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Let's assume you have a large group of people to shoot outdoors and you are going to need to stack them with some behind and others in front. You get the arrangement looking just right and shoot it. The people behind are going to look just a little bit smaller than those in front.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhZj3J3G1TnlknJv7wXSS5Hr_cVDSV1UYefqKML15lyp6Qls5B0k7MmZeU9VYP-lzx0zkrXZRbQ87kiPpU5vH_7s2TbqSEoennfU9GNEB0bVoraEKC-cd8KZyiHlGn2pptmOuPXBJ5z/s1600/peopel+1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="255" data-original-width="672" height="242" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhZj3J3G1TnlknJv7wXSS5Hr_cVDSV1UYefqKML15lyp6Qls5B0k7MmZeU9VYP-lzx0zkrXZRbQ87kiPpU5vH_7s2TbqSEoennfU9GNEB0bVoraEKC-cd8KZyiHlGn2pptmOuPXBJ5z/s640/peopel+1.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
A way to avoid this is to shoot with a long telephoto lens and get far, far back from the group. One well respected studio does just this and has a person on a walkie talkie (or cell phone) with the group being photographed so the photographer at the camera can give last minute placement instructions.<br />
<br />
With the lens stopped down to a small aperture, you have both the front line of people and those behind all in focus. You also now have flattened the field and both lines of people now look about the same in size.<br />
<br />

<span style="background-color: white; color: #1c1e21; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;">My love for moviemaking equipment just might be an obsession!</span></h2>
<span style="background-color: white; color: #1c1e21; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;">I have two high end prosumer Sony Betamax editing VCR's. I just played with them today and they still work perfectly. Purchased in 1988 and 1989, one of them is an ED Beta that used metal tape and was higher resolution than Laserdisk assuming you could actually get material recorded high resolution or could afford the ridiculously expensive camcorder that was also ED Fomat. Finally I could professionally edit my productions.</span><br />
<span style="background-color: white; color: #1c1e21; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;"><br /></span>
<span style="background-color: white; color: #1c1e21; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;">I'm so glad I can still access my library of home vide, Miss Wisconsin USofA Pageants and drag shows from long long ago. I even have some sound super 8 home movies I transfered to video some time ago.</span><br />
<span style="background-color: white; color: #1c1e21; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;"><br /></span>
<span style="background-color: white; color: #1c1e21; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;"><br /></span>
<span style="background-color: white; color: #1c1e21; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;">Growing up, my father let me play with an 8mm movie camera and I was hooked. I rapidly progressed to Super 8 and then sound super 8 using a Syncronex 24 fps camera and companion cassette recorder, You had to send Syncronex the film and cassette to get it developed, the magnetic sound stripe added to the film and sound transferred from the cassette. Kodak's sound super 8 format came out soon after recording sound on a mag stripe right on the film as you shot the movie with higher quality. (Ektasound)</span><br />

<span style="background-color: white; color: #1c1e21; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;">My first VCR was a Toshiba Beta format video recorder for just under $1000. My first video camera was the very expensive Toshiba color video camera they claim is the first affordable consumer color video camera (Purchased in1979 for $1000+ or </span><span style="background-color: white; color: #1c1e21; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;">about $3335.00 in todays dollars). Sadly it had really poor image quality unless it had tons of light. The two-color striped filter over the one inch vidicon tube made nasty blue or red patterns over complex details. Both the VCR and camera required AC power as portable video recorders for consumers was not a thing yet. I remember vividly using it to shoot a birthday party outdoors keeping the recorder on a rolling cart and using a long extension cord. Crazy as I was, we also climbed a vertical rung ladder on a stone gazebo to hoist the camera and heavy VCR up onto it's roof and shoot another friends party with a 350 degree veiw of the property. </span><br />

Not near as small or light as the sound super 8, but a really good lens and easy to use over long periods. <span style="background-color: white; color: #1c1e21; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;">Through all this my meager wages had to be split between my love for shooting moving pictures and my passion for photography. Yes I have Nikon's top of the line full frame cameras and lenses that shoot video, but they are a pain to use and you don't always have one with you when you need it. My iphone shoots 4K and has rudimentary image stabilization. It is still a pain to use for long shoots compared to my first cameras including the shoulder mounted Toshiba and both Betamovie camcorders but again, I always have it on hand when something interesting comes up.</span><br />

Tarl Knight Pursues Growth for Local Artists with the Artory and Artour</h2>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<div>
Every once in awhile I am introduced to someone who has just the right amount of ambition, talent, and single-minded drive to disrupt the status quo. So it is with Tarl Knight who I recently shot for a cover of Quest Magazine. He’s young, good looking and has the energy needed to get things done. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Tarl is out to grow the art community in the Green Bay area, giving local musicians and other creative artists a new place to work and play. His first incarnation <b>The Artory</b> is located downtown in the Bellin Building. Already a small but growing community of artists have outgrown this space and Tarl, with help from several others, are on the hunt for a much bigger location that will hopefully provide both living space as well as studio spaces so artists can work and live in the same area.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiy4XQcs1YNpj9IrhrNAxCv86Pvi1O9T4SwZrovhHYmr9ZIVHbkyUkz7B6K-BpgzbpJB7T6IJ_EWShtTvZl83tE2hRqErmGJe5cRKiW45OKJIJZzw5aAhXsYPGpe6O1WMZZ1yrIBNfR/s1600/DSC_2780-+BW.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="826" data-original-width="1600" height="330" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiy4XQcs1YNpj9IrhrNAxCv86Pvi1O9T4SwZrovhHYmr9ZIVHbkyUkz7B6K-BpgzbpJB7T6IJ_EWShtTvZl83tE2hRqErmGJe5cRKiW45OKJIJZzw5aAhXsYPGpe6O1WMZZ1yrIBNfR/s640/DSC_2780-+BW.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Not satisfied with just one project, <b>Artour of the Arts</b> was born with Tarl Knight as Director of Operations and Zoe Muzak as the Assistant Director. Artour of the Arts, held on July 21-23 featured live original art, music, and poetry! The fest featured 200 sets by 50 acoustic bands at 12 venues around the downtown area. The festival was literally thrown together in a few month’s time.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<b>Artour of the Arts</b> took it’s inspiration from the <b>Steel Bridge Songfest</b> in Sturgeon Bay. Started about twelve years ago as a fundraiser to save the Michigan Street bridge, this festival features local and national entertainers performing only original material. (No cover bands)</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgkl8lI5EGFLKxT7Z_WleiKKi214Ut4pbDhLKzUKNUD4y4V_iw0z-BSt2zYRu35yHJ7YqqsUMYfv5Zv97rK75NdXThAumI9u_PZzv_vhVNaaU7CJuGhscwHmPc0wmuYnWvamuV1e4s5/s1600/DSC_4652.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1067" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgkl8lI5EGFLKxT7Z_WleiKKi214Ut4pbDhLKzUKNUD4y4V_iw0z-BSt2zYRu35yHJ7YqqsUMYfv5Zv97rK75NdXThAumI9u_PZzv_vhVNaaU7CJuGhscwHmPc0wmuYnWvamuV1e4s5/s320/DSC_4652.jpg" width="213" /></a></div>
<div>
The <b><i>Artory</i></b> has already started plans for a bigger festival next summer but you won’t have to wait because they have other events. A glow party with music titled <b style="font-style: italic;">Artory Lite</b><b style="font-style: italic;"> </b>was held on September 23 at the <b>Art Garage</b> in Green Bay. This consisted of artworks designed to glow under black light and musicians on stage painted for the glow as well. glow stick bracelets plus food and drink that glowed under blacklight helped create a festive mood. I enjoyed an opportunity to try out a new video rig during this event to create a few music video clips. <a href="https://youtu.be/XGbK3011PR4" style="border: 0px; color: #167ac6; cursor: pointer; font-family: "YouTube Noto", Roboto, arial, sans-serif; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank">https://youtu.be/XGbK3011PR4</a> the band Hypheria <a href="https://youtu.be/P9CJjH8AcKQ" style="border: 0px; color: #167ac6; cursor: pointer; font-family: "YouTube Noto", Roboto, arial, sans-serif; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank">https://youtu.be/P9CJjH8AcKQ</a> the band Storm & the Silver Lining featuring Tarl Knight on piano.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
This January a version of Artour called <b>Artic</b> (how fitting considering our winters up here) is in the works. Passes will be available soon at <a href="http://www.theartory.com/">www.TheArtory.com</a>.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
It was probably inevitable Artour would happen. Tarl helped with the <b>Steel Bridge Songfest</b> while living in Sturgeon Bay. Pat McDonald, formerly of the band <b>Timbuk3</b>, has been a big influence on this young man. (Grammy nominated world famous singer/songwriter McDonald lives in Door County and is originally from Green Bay.)</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Last year while in Sturgeon Bay, Tarl recorded an acoustic album titled <b>Tarl Knight</b>, available as a CD and also in 12” vinyl: <a href="http://www.tarlknight.com/">www.TarlKnight.com</a>. A second acoustic album titled<i> <b>Tarl Knight...</b></i> is being recorded in the studio and when complete will also be available on his website.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEihprJ7aSIh4SzvOoqLcNSE9lD84mXQUWGv7v1PMgpDn3hRRLgOSPwo4CqZ6cpMyJTz2BAVROwB30M-LwRYNC-Sq0rMBAlt2_lp21b2RpDp98q1qfbYK-gATtf0E5A7nqYQSe-OKXsS/s1600/DSC_4887.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1023" data-original-width="1600" height="255" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEihprJ7aSIh4SzvOoqLcNSE9lD84mXQUWGv7v1PMgpDn3hRRLgOSPwo4CqZ6cpMyJTz2BAVROwB30M-LwRYNC-Sq0rMBAlt2_lp21b2RpDp98q1qfbYK-gATtf0E5A7nqYQSe-OKXsS/s400/DSC_4887.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
I have enjoyed several live performances where Tarl played with another of my favorite musicians, Bob Balsley; first at <b><i>PrideAlive</i></b> in July, in August at <b style="font-style: italic;">The Distillery, </b>more recently at <b style="font-style: italic;">Rum Runners</b> and a special birthday show at <b style="font-style: italic;">The Artory </b>on September 22. I must confess I can listen to Tarl’s smooth, rich voice and never tire. Bob and Tarl have a great synergy that feeds off one another to give a great performance.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
When Tarl performs for <b>The Artory </b>events or an open mic, you get the opportunity to enjoy pieces that he has written, played and sang. I asked Tarl during an open Mic night what his favorite instrument was, piano or guitar. He said he didn't have a favorite but he considers his voice his favorite instrument. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
In addition to the search for better studio/performing space, a radio station is in the works that will feature original music of artists from around Wisconsin.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
When you take into account everything this young talented singer/songwriter has been working on the past months it is not hard to imagine he will succeed in all these endeavors. I will be sure to follow up as things progress.</div>
</div>

Where I Work Out</h2>

I train weekly at Pro Fitness in Green Bay. My personal trainer, Darron (far right in the photo) helps me improve my body strength and also lose some around that middle. Being in good shape is important for a photographer I have found, especially now that modern digital cameras keep getting bigger and heavier.</div>

This photo is a composite of the window exposure and the main group shot. It is lit with just one small flash unit into a very large umbrella. One of the personal trainers in this staff photo was wearing a shirt with the Pro Fitness logo in pink. We wanted them to all look the same. This was no problem for Photoshop.</div>

Photographing the Male Physique</h2>
<br />
I am continuing my study on photographing the male form. Here are a couple more of Andrew shot back in January 2015. This was the third time I have worked with Andrew. I added new strip lights for specifically bought this shoot. I now have a large beauty dish to play with as well. This lighting is more difficult to get just right and I enjoy the challenge.<br />

<br />
This past Wednesday I completed another series with Nick (a dancer) to use in Quest Magazine's May issue. I used the new beauty dish for the first time. I will be shooting a third model, John the day after he competes in a body building competition (early April).<br />
<br />
(I will post images from these shoots near the end of April or in May after going to press.)<br />
<br />
To do this kind of lighting well, I need a home studio that has taller ceilings than what I previously shot in. I have mostly shot small children or product photography at home in the past. Now I am beginning to convert a large section of my three stall garage into a dedicated shooting space. Sadly because much of what I shoot is on location, I can't justify the expense of a studio and have to make do with less for now.<br />
<br />
One last image. A friend, Katie was there with me when it was time to send my cat Orangello to kitty heaven. I know, I should be stronger! It was therefor and honor to be asked to shoot her with Princess the week before Princess was to go live with Orangello in the afterlife. Princess was a pleasure to work with, but that might be the treats that Katie bribed her with during the entire shoot.<br />
Rest in peace Princess.<br />

<span style="font-size: x-large;">January is cold! So I shoot in studio.</span></h2>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I haven't posted since November. Personal stuff with family, flu, holidays kept me away... but I have shot a few things this January I wish to share.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The next cover of Quest will feature Andrew Marks who has been on the Quest cover before. This will be his third time to be featured in the magazine. It is my first time trying out lighting technique I learned attending a seminar presented by Phoenix photographer Joel Grimes at Imaging USA, the PPA convention in Phoenix last January. I needed to buy a few new light modifiers first, then find a date that would could work for Andrew and I.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
This lighting is designed to really bring out the body and muscle tone. In this image Andrew has not applied oil to his skin yet so it lacks that metallic sheen. Joel Grimes would do quite a bit more work to grunge things up for his photos for Sports Illustrated or rock band images. I am keeping it a bit more simple here. I don't want to give away what is inside Quest just yet. That hits the street on Thursday, February 5, but I can show you this first attempt at processing the images.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh8wqu1K6L2sEBmSo3S7qRgeziUHmkcCsa6nnRgXLqYWSTynCDMYcnoQ6wDqQ8VXwpskF_OLJ-2ox6i8GYJD8Br9jOWq3HFb0UdZfArS7mOoblqwudfYt7ANloc6uT2tNTvf3MPDFRm/s1600/Andrew2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh8wqu1K6L2sEBmSo3S7qRgeziUHmkcCsa6nnRgXLqYWSTynCDMYcnoQ6wDqQ8VXwpskF_OLJ-2ox6i8GYJD8Br9jOWq3HFb0UdZfArS7mOoblqwudfYt7ANloc6uT2tNTvf3MPDFRm/s1600/Andrew2.jpg" height="640" width="538" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Andrew posted on facebook he was sore from the flexing. It was a two hour shoot, so I can understand. People think modeling is so easy. Not true. Andrew is a joy to work with however and it was helpful to have his girlfriend along to assist with posing and styling. I hope we can shoot again in the future. There will be one series from this shoot that will not be in the magazine, I will post one or two of those here next month after I process the images using Photoshop.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<b><span style="color: #9fc5e8; font-size: large;">Also in January</span></b> I had the opportunity to shoot a vocalist from the greater Green Bay area. Sara Saari has a great voice and was so much fun to work with. She sings with Bay Area Big Band but also does gigs for hire. Check out her website: <a href="http://sarahsaari.com/"><span style="color: #cfe2f3;">http://sarahsaari.com</span></a> or find her on facebook. Better yet, come check out the next time Bay Area Big Band does a concert. <a href="https://www.facebook.com/BABigBand"><span style="color: #9fc5e8;">https://www.facebook.com/BABigBand</span></a><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiGbO3QREd8t3OEL4c_FSoZOoSxaRwQpoP4Ayp-D4qVn8Et3B5LQHJpqnktmEz3hr14s3Gf9DsWlBb83V5_updhk_6xjQte5MvpXsj4t1-qx_5TUE8YUCCQyRZZdsvVbjPjMATUKdiT/s1600/Sarahsarri.com.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiGbO3QREd8t3OEL4c_FSoZOoSxaRwQpoP4Ayp-D4qVn8Et3B5LQHJpqnktmEz3hr14s3Gf9DsWlBb83V5_updhk_6xjQte5MvpXsj4t1-qx_5TUE8YUCCQyRZZdsvVbjPjMATUKdiT/s1600/Sarahsarri.com.jpg" height="640" width="444" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Sarah wanted a photo that included her baby grand piano. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Hard to believe this was shot in her living room isn't it?</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Shooting on location is often a challenge to have enough room for placing lights and camera. Today we can use tiny battery operated flash with small light modifiers. The Rogue FlashBender soft box saved this shoot. My main light is a studio strobe with a large umbrella off camera on the left. I then added The Rogue FlashBender softbox on a boom stand stretched out across the piano to the black backdrop so I could back light the piano and provide hair light for Sarah. Because we couldn't have a black curtain behind us 15 or 20 feet out of the light, I used Photoshop to help get this look of a concert on stage.</div>

<span style="color: #e69138; font-size: x-large;">Photographing the loft</span></h2>
<div>
I have several friends in Phoenix that I visit often. For the past year Ian has been working on converting a run down warehouse unit into a loft apartment. I have watched this process from the beginning and had no doubt it would turn out nicely, but I was thrilled when I saw the final results. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I wanted a chance to photograph the loft once finished. Ian's birthday/halloween costume party was just the right affair to introduce his loft to 173 of his closest friends. I was on hand to shoot the festivities. (I alsohelped pick up empty glasses, cleaned up spills and grabbed stuff for the bartenders since I was a former bar owner and this is second nature for me.) That was all day Friday and Friday night so by Saturday morning I was exhausted.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
After resting, another Halloween party and then more rest, it was time to get ready to fly home, but not until I had gotten my chance to photograph the newly cleaned loft free of people. Below are the results.</div>

I used a tripod and my wonderfully sharp Nikkor 16-35mm ultra wide lens to shoot these interiors. We live in a wonderful time when it is possible to buy light stands, umbrella reflectors and speed lights that can easily be packed into my luggage so I can travel by air and still have what I need to do an awesome shoot. I used some hidden strobes remote triggered to fill in in some exposures, but mostly this is lit with the room lighting. It is difficult to balance getting to see the room and still be able to not have the lights completely washed out. I was happy with these results, and the client (my friend Ian) loved them. For the party, I used the light stand and umbrella that fold very tiny but open to an impressive size. I will post just one photo below from the party.</div>

I am fortunate to have two healthy and fairly mobile parents who are at the moment both 90. I shot a family reunion series on location for my mom's 90th birthday back in June. This included a white backdrop for individual family groups as well as one massive group shot outdoors with 39 people including me. (I used the timer and ran!)</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Since this was on location at a rented hall, I kept it simple with just a plain white backdrop.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
With this many people, I had to shoot fast to get it all done during our short visit.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
You can probably tell I prefer people to be having fun while I shoot them.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I am interested in developing a look to some of my portrait work that harkens back to the early 1900's when photography was still very new and our tools were much more crude. I love the old sets the studios created and I also love some of the poses, so stiff and often pretty stark.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I have just started collecting what is needed for this project, but in the meantime, I am going to have some fun with a new background I bought for this. I wanted to have my parents pose on this new backdrop and make a formal portrait of them at the age of 90. The last time they had a portrait taken was in the 1990's and I think they still make a great looking couple today!</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
They were very patient with me.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
In fact after I got them warmed up, they were quite fun to shoot. </div>

Summer in Italy and My Getting in Shape</h2>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I haven't posted much lately and I have several items I want to get to, but the retouching is not competed yet.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
This past June my family and I took a trip to Umbria, Italy to visit relatives. We stayed at a wonderful country house, Villa Pascolo which means in english Villa Pasture. (Think Bed and Breakfast/Hotel) While there I had the opportunity to shoot interiors and a few outside shots of this wonderful place. </div>

There was a wedding on one weekend and let me say they have different customs. While tossing the bride into the air, the men almost dropped her on the gravel driveway. Wow, I think we are better with just tossing the bouquet!</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
I will have more photos to come from Costacciaro and other small towns in Umbria soon.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div>
Also this summer I made a personal commitment to get in shape. People who know me well understand how reluctant I always was to exercise, but at long last I have taken the plunge. The past 4 years I have been changing my diet to include healthier choices. I even cut out Diet Coke and even caffeine. That leaves Decaf coffee and water (and a few beers or a glass of wine.) Now I am working with a personal trainer twice a week. My goal is to lose some weight around my belly and more importantly build my strength and muscle tone. I need it to carry around all this heavy camera equipment.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Speaking of diet, I am eating a lot of salads these days, and found out how much better they taste when you combine berries and other stuff. When I eat at home I keep it simple. Below is a photo I took of my typical salad this summer. Leaf lettuce, almonds a drizzle of pomegranate dressing and either raspberries or strawberries on top. YUM!</div>

<div>
I actually shot this wedding back in March 2014 in the Fox Valley but I wanted to wait until the wedding couple had time to view everything and begin to choose which photos they want in print to post anything here.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I decided to play around with some border art on a few of these. </div>
<div>
I can't decide if I like it enough to do more of this or not. What do you think?</div>

Wisconsin weddings have a tradition with the wedding party bar hopping after the ceremony and before the reception. I haven't gone on one of these in a while since a new trend is outdoor weddings and receptions all in the same location. The bride decided to rent a limo for the bar hopping. It was packed but a wide angle lens still allowed for some fun photos.</div>

<br /></div>
One of the clients I shoot commercial work for is in the business of teaching crafting that includes nature in the theme. Swanstone Gardens located just north of Green Bay is a real living and working garden and classrooms and also the place owner David Calhoon calls home. In late spring I will shoot a few pictures of the grounds and gardens so you can see how beautiful the place is.<br />
<br />
Swantone Gardens is well known for the nature classes they teach, but it is also a great location to have a Green Bay area wedding or outdoor portrait shoot. You will need permission of course, so use the phone number below or on the website to ask first. (There may be a small fee asked) While you are at it, you could ask me for a quote on shooting your portrait or wedding and I will obtain permission if it is possible on the date you select.<br />

<span style="color: #cc0000;"><span style="font-size: x-large;">Shooting Magazine Covers for Quest</span></span></h2>
<h3>
<span style="font-size: large;">In addition to shooting portraits or weddings and events, </span><span style="font-size: large;">I also shoot a bit of commercial work.</span></h3>
<br />
In future blog entries I will talk about shooting flower photography for Burst, a flower and gift shop in Green Bay and the unique items I shoot for Swanstone Gardens which offer nature and craft classes. I shoot images and then produce their twice yearly catalog of classes. I am working on the Spring 2014 Swanstone catalogue this month.<br />
<br />
There are also a few other commercial clients I am working with, and then there are the covers for Quest Magazine.<br />
<br />
Quest is a free publication paid for with advertising. It targets the LGBT community in Wisconsin including arts and entertainment, movie and theatre reviews and of course the ads.<br />
<br />
Shooting covers for publications with a shoestring budget can be a challenge. I have included two recent samples of covers that I think turned out very well.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh3LsDNiYZPgT8OMKUCOW4gyt29C0bE-84SWUWDIb4UNXvlI67mdPOitnuo8otOHVrhdCJ90c8T6Ryb8VJihwGJEtV5MWJdN_x5-ABLCD2efI2iOqQZ2T95odQqGrJrdSjqRMqbIoy-/s1600/JAN+Cover+flat.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh3LsDNiYZPgT8OMKUCOW4gyt29C0bE-84SWUWDIb4UNXvlI67mdPOitnuo8otOHVrhdCJ90c8T6Ryb8VJihwGJEtV5MWJdN_x5-ABLCD2efI2iOqQZ2T95odQqGrJrdSjqRMqbIoy-/s1600/JAN+Cover+flat.jpg" height="640" width="489" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Shooting a DJ for the cover was a fun project. I didn't need to shoot at a bar and using a studio location allowed some extra creativity. This cover image was created on a black background in studio using white light on him and raking the guy with three spot lights using colored gels. I wanted to give the feeling of being in a big club. To finish the photo I added a stock image of a dance light on the right that comes at you from the same direction his had is. Together this composite gives the mood of excitement you find at a dance club.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
More often I am shooting a few people actually in a bar that is being promoted. For this bar outside Appleton/Neenah Wisconsin, I had challenging lighting to start with. The club is lit with neon and colored compact fluorescent lights. There is also a lot of LED effect lighting. Since the ceiling was black (like in so many clubs today) I needed to use as soft a main light as I could. This shot was done using a strobe in a very large umbrella and a fill light for the background. I used a long exposure to get the LED lights in the champagne buckets and those long drink tubes (not sure what those are) to show the color of the lights. I also needed those liquor bottles in the background to be lit.</div>

<br />
During the recent Imaging USA show in Phoenix, I signed up to use ImageQuix so wedding couples and people who have portraits taken have a more convenient method to order prints and other products. I will use it for other projects as well.<br />
<br />
To test this system out, I decided to make some of my landscape photography available for sale for the first time. This offer is not available by searching the web. I am not using services like Zenfolio so the only people who will be able to buy these images are those that have found the link on this page. Sounds Exclusive doesn't it? :-)<br />
<br />
The best part is I will personally print your image on a brand new state of the art Epson printer. This solid ink jet machine uses technology that provides an incredible quality image that will last more than a lifetime; 200 or more years to be precise. <br />
<br />
You also get to select from two paper types. <br />
<br />
<span style="color: #b6d7a8;">Gallery Fiber Paper</span> looks more like a post card stock. It is very thick and sturdy. The image has a soft semi gloss look and this paper is designed to give the maximum sharpness and image quality of any paper.<br />
<br />
<span style="color: #b6d7a8;">Velvet Fine Art Paper </span>is the one I fell in love with at the trade show. This has a look and feel of a water color paper. Heavy weight with a slight texture. This will not look like a photograph, but more like a piece of art. I am going to use this I'm my own home in frames without glass. Velvet Fine Art is also an Epson brand paper with maximum image quality and color that is vibrant.<br />
<br />
Large prints are shipped in mailing tubes so they are not bent. You will need to find your own favorite frame and matting to suit your personal tastes.<br />
<br />
I only placed a small sample of images in this gallery today and I will add several more in the weeks to come. If you love what you see, I hope you will buy an image. I think I have priced these very affordably considering the quality. If you have a friend who you think would be interested, I would appreciate you sharing this link.<br />
<br />

<h3>
<span style="color: #073763;">WINTER BEAUTY IS ABUNDANT IN UPPER MICHIGAN</span></h3>
<div>
Wisconsin Public Radio has been promoting ice caves at the Apostle Islands near Bayfield Wisconsin as that portion of Lake Superior has frozen over for the first time in five years. There have been reports of upwards of 2000 people venturing out in our extra frigid temperatures to capture this beauty on camera or just to view it in person. I have several friends who recently made this trip.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
If you don't want to travel that far, you may want to consider other ice caves nearer to Green Bay and the Fox Valley. I just returned from shooting at Eben Ice Caves in Upper Michigan.<br />

You'll need to walk a little over a mile from where you park. The ice structures are located in the Rock River Canyon. Be sure to bring layers of clothing and wear boots that have spikes added to give you traction. I slipped a few times and worried about damaging a brand new Nikon camera. I am not used to walking out in the cold long distances on this kind of terrain, and I did fine, so just about anyone will be abel to venture to this spot.<br />

On this fine and sunny Saturday we were surrounded by nearly a hundred other people coming and going. This place is popular! The great thing for me was it is easier to do than visiting the Apostle Islands especially if you are not in great shape. I will need to do a few more outings before I am ready to try Apostle Islands.<br />
<br />
<br />
The caves are not really caves in the traditional sense, but large ice structures formed by the constant seepage of water through the walls of the Rock River Gorge. Even with our recent sub zero weather, the water continues to flow and form something different each year.<br />
<br />
<br />
There is a Facebook page for the ice caves <a href="https://www.facebook.com/Eben.Ice.Caves">https://www.facebook.com/Eben.Ice.Caves</a><br />
There is also abundant information if you do a google search online.<br />

I started using a camera in high school while working on our school newspaper and the Annual Yearbook. By graduation I was busy experimenting with 35mm photography and super 8 movie film. I thought I wanted to be a filmmaker at the time.<br />
<br />
Over the years I have been involved in photography one way or another. I have shot video using crude B/W industrial cameras for the UW Madison School of Nursing until color was affordable. I did paste-up and layout for a small free entertainment newspaper "The Entertainer" in Green Bay. I became a DJ and later a club owner. During this same period of my life I attended the commercial photography program at Rochester Institute of Technology and then worked in a medium sized commercial studio in Appleton Wisconsin for nearly a decade. All these things have impacted how much time I had to devote to the one thing I always come back to; I love shooting still photography and I especially love shooting people.<br />
<br />
I currently publish a magazine called Quest. This free bar publication is now 21 years old but in only the last four years since technology allowed Quest to become a slick color glossy have I been able to use it as a forum to publish my work.<br />
<br />
I am fortunate to have been able to use most of the technology of photography over the years. I have shot and developed both black and white film as well as color negative and transparency. I have used 4x5 sheet film view cameras for commercial work, 120mm medium format roll film for shooting weddings, fashion and family portraiture. 35mm although the easiest and most affordable was my go to when doing work for the magazine or small sized images for freelance commercial work. I was unhappy using 35mm until the digital SLR cameras became affordable.<br />

I bought my first digital SLR, a Nikon D70 in 2005. It seems like yesterday, but it has been 8 years and I have honed my skills, built a new portfolio and acquired top of the line cameras, lenses and studio lighting all with a dream to open my own studio.<br />
<br />
I love trying new techniques and to use new tools. We read all the time digital technology has flooded the market with people trying to start a career in photography. Many long time professionals complain about this all the time. I say there has never been a better time to be a photographer. There also has never been a better time for a family needing a group portrait or a bride and groom in need of wedding photography. The tools we have to work with today seem almost too easy to use therefore many new photographers starting out find they can do some pretty wonderful things right away. In the hands of someone with skills learned through time, the results are just breathtaking.<br />

<span style="text-align: center;"><span style="text-align: start;">The thing about growing of your artistic abilities is the process never ends. I am revisiting earlier work putting together marketing materials and websites for <a href="http://mariucciphotography.com/">MariucciPhotography.com</a> and I can see how far I have come in that time.</span></span><br />
<span style="text-align: center;"><br /></span>
<span style="text-align: center;">I love shooting people. Shooting a great looking model is fun but so is creating an heirloom family portrait. </span><span style="text-align: center;">I am excited about the </span><span style="text-align: center;">recent resurgence of the <b>classic family portrait</b>. Years ago I recreated timeless images of children shot using the soft natural north light and turned them into museum quality large black and white portraits. Today </span><span style="text-align: center;">I am starting work building a portfolio of shoots that will have a <b>classic renaissance</b> feel. This look is a refreshed version of what family portraiture looked like years ago. Who in the Green bay area wouldn't love to get their family portrait taken in a way that will be timeless. Years from now that portrait hanging over the fireplace will not look dated or out of place. It is an investment that will hold onto it's value.</span><br />

<span style="text-align: center;">My dream of having a great studio space is still in my future as I am still building this business. I am not quite ready to hang up my sign "open for business" but if you or someone you know is willing to experiment and wants a portrait that is really amazing and different, please call me to set up an appointment. We will both have a great time and the results will be timeless.</span><br />

<span style="text-align: start;">A few thoughts on a different photography topic:</span></h4>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="text-align: start;">The news is buzzing with talk of the Associated Press removing work of a Pulitzer Prize winning photographer because he used software to alter an image: <a href="http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2544662/Pulitzer-Prize-winning-photographer-fired-admitting-doctored-Syrian-war-rebel-picture-photoshopping-camera-original-image.html?ITO=1490&ns_mchannel=rss&ns_campaign=1490">http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2544662/Pulitzer-Prize-winning-photographer-fired-admitting-doctored-Syrian-war-rebel-picture-photoshopping-camera-original-image.html?ITO=1490&ns_mchannel=rss&ns_campaign=1490</a></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="text-align: start;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="text-align: start;">There are countless discussions of how much is too much when using Photoshop to create "perfect" models for use in fashion and on the covers of fashion magazines. Here a male model gives his perspective on Cosmo Live: <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xxMYw3Mm2kY">https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xxMYw3Mm2kY</a> </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="text-align: start;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="text-align: start;">I would love to hear your comments. What is your favorite look in a portrait? </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="text-align: start;">Is it ok to alter images for magazine fashion or for news?</span></div>
